The Daily Shuffle #11: Alt-J

Huh?
Matilda by Alt-J, taken from their spectacular 2012 debut album, An Awesome Wave.

Why?
My first encounter with Alt-J was in the passengers seat of a Ford Fiesta. They weren't, regrettably, in the car at the time, but were playing rather loudly on the stereo (which was the reason for my being in the car and not the perfectly good house of which it was parked outside), and I was struck by the unique  quality of frontman Joe Newman's voice on Fiztpleasure.

And?
Newman's peerless pipes are complemented perfectly by gentle arpeggio-picked guitar chords, brushed, treble-heavy percussion and a wholesome bass-line, which carries the song to an harmonious and beguiling chorus ('and she needs you / this is from Matilda') before fading out in a wash of crooning falsetto vocals.

Who cares?
For fans of intricate, indie-art-rock. See also: Foals, and, whilst we're on the subject of falsetto vocals, Bon Iver.
